Show COPY February 4, I960 Professor Christina Phelps Harris Department of Political Science Stanford University Stanford, California Dear Professor Harris: It is really difficult for me to express to you not only the joy with which I received the good news cont ined in your letter of February 1, I960, but also my appreciation of your thoughtfulness in rushing the news, unofficial and confidential though it still is, to me at this time. Now that I have your letter, and the as:uranccs it contains, I shall find it easier to wait for the official confirmatioa to arrive, and for the details to be subsequ ntly worked out. I cam ot conceal the fact from you that, though I had received your hopeful letters and Professor North's promising letter already, I was becoming somewhat restive, because, after five montas in the United States since my return from the Middle East, 1 was developing a desire to do more than I have been doing (I have been lecturing and writing on a fairly-wide scale, but I have not been able to initiate any systematic long-range project) and some concern about financial matters as well. At the same time, however, 1 remained hopeful that somctaing would work out at Stanford, and I accordingly succeeded in "stalling" with respect to an invitati n I had receive.! from St. Anthony1s College, Oxford, for a project similar to the one we have in mind, and anotaer invitation f.om the University of Fribourg for teacaing. I informed both universities that I was expecting some developments in connection with an unnamed university in the United States, and that I would communicate .ith them later on in the spring if those developments fail*to mate;ialire. 1 shall contact Dr. Berger tomorrow, and ariaage to discuss tue matter vith him after he receives your letter. Once again I want to thank you for your interest, for your role in making the good news, and for your thoughtfulness in conveying it to me even before it has been officially confirmed. four, sincerely and grateful'y, |
