Existentiality is one-sided and inauthentic unless it takes them both into consideration} and neither of them, alone and excluding the other, is conducive to the authentic existentiality of philosophy. «• * a- %• aim in the present Essay is to examine the conception of "existential philosophy," and to determine the nature and the constituent elements of its formal character, namely, its "existentiality." To do so, however, I have to distinguish between the formal characterization of philosophy, "existential," on the one hand, and the material characterization, "existentialist" -to which it is related, yet from Tfhich it is distinct, notwithstanding the prevalent convictions to the contrary- on the other hand. vii |
