MIDEAST OIL Dave Garroway, Monitor, at 8:00 P.M, over WRCA (NY) and NBC We twork GARROWAY: "Say, a couple of months ago we spoke with a gentleman named Dr, Benjamin Schwadran, the editor of a journal called "Middle Eastern Affairs," author of the books, ''The Middle East Oil" and "The Great Powers," That was at the time of the seizure of the Suez Canal, and Dr, Schwadran helped us understand some of the ramifications of the situation at the time. Well now the plot has definitely thickened and we though we'd ask Dr, Schwadran to come back and give us more of his Information and ideas. "Doctor, f i r s t of a l l , I think people want to know whether you speak in favor of one side or the other, whether you have particul a r interests at heart. Do you mind t e l l i n g us from what viewpoint you speak?" SCHWADRAN: "Definitely I don't represent any viewpoint, and I do not represent any s i d e . We represent a scholarly organization, the Council for Middle Eastern Affairs, whose primary purpose is to present as is humanly possible the entire picture of the Middle East as objectively as scholars can do. And this Is what our magazine, "Middle Eastern Affairs," is attempting to do. We do not represent any side or any point of view." GARROWAY: "Doctor, do you think the conflict in the Middle East is s t i l l basically a conflict between Israel and Egypt?" SCHWADRAN: "No. In my mind i t never was t h a t . It Is basically a conflict between the attempt of Russia to dominate the world and between the democratic forces who are trying to preserve our democratic way of l i f e . It was so from the beginning, and i t is even more obvious now that i t is not a struggle between Egypt and I s r a e l or between Israel and the Arabs.
