Sport The Sport class put on another team show. Velo City Cyclists had the bodies to dominate and that's just what they did. They must be taking lessons from Brackman's because Velo City had four of the top five finishers. John O'Brien (Utah Premier), in his second race of the day, helped power the break which included eventual winner Brad Barnes and silver-medalist David Wood. Barnes was clearly the ironman of the break, showing the way up the hill each lap. "I had to tell him to take it easy on us on the hill," a satisfied O'Brien said. "He was really strong." In the closing laps of the race, Barnes put an exclamation point on his win by riding away from his break companions for a well-deserved solo win. Wood jumped away from O'Brien on the hill finish to capture silver. 2 0 3 M I L E S LOGAN UTAH TO JACKSON HOLE WYOMING Saturday, September 24, 1994 For Information Sunrise Cyclery (801) 753-3294 Cache Chamber of Commerce 1(800) 882-4433 Rentals Financing cBingtiam Cyclery* 10-7 M-F 10-6 Sat. Rod Smith (Brackman's) took advantage of teammate Nathan Parks' long breakaway to gamer first place in the Elite/Expert race. Parks and team manager Andrew Brewer attacked at the gun, taking with them Heber Natter (Northshore) and Jay Salazar (Mi Duole). At the 9-mile mark, Salazar could no longer match the pace of the leaders and was spun off the back. When the remaining three leaders reached the final climb on the first lap, Brewer realized he was no match for Natter and Parks and waved them on. Parks and Natter then worked together to move out of sight and built a 5:00 minute lead which they held until the fifth lap. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Brackman's methodically began to send attacks up the road, making the other riders chase them down. Soon, they got teammates Smith, Burke Swindlehurst and Tom Denison off with Don Armstrong (Northshore) along for the ride. Or so he thought. Brackman's tend prefers their own company when in a break. So, with Armstrong at the back of the break, the rider in front of him would slow down, allowing a gap to develop, forcing Armstrong to accelerate around to 10th Annual Canyonlands Fat Tire ^7 Of October 25-29 Daily Guided Rides Special Events Evening Entertainment World's Greatest Halloween For information 259-5333 close the gap. Finally, there was one gap too many and Armstrong could not close it. The Brackman's rider then easily went around Armstrong to join his teammates. Midway through the fifth of six circuits, Natter suddenly tired. "We had a good gap," Parks said. "Then Heber started to drop off and I thought, 'No, Heber, stay with me.' " Natter, however, was unable to contribute and Parks had no choice but to go on alone. His three teammates caught Parks about one mile before the finish. Smith attacked as they started up the final climb and held the gap to the line. Parks would finish second as reward for his efforts. Swindlehurst and Denison came across for third and fourth in that order. Phil Noble led the chase group in for fifth. The Sport category saw little action until the fifth lap. At the top of the hill halfway through the circuit, a group of four got a small gap. They began to work together and were still off the front at the start of the final lap. A chase group of five had formed and with no apparent teamwork to slow the chase down, the leaders were unable to move out of sight. Four miles into the last lap, the two groups rejoined and stayed together until the final climb to the finish. After making the turn onto the climb, a couple of riders attacked, but were soon slowed by the wind and reabsorbed. At that point, "Everyone kind of died," stated Jeff Sargent of Canyon Velo, "and I just took off." Though Martin Grygar (SCRT) chased hard, he was unable to close the gap and Sargent sprinted for the win. The Intermediate/Beginner men's race saw no serious breakaway and was sorted out on the final climb. Kevin Barnes and Travis Tenney (Brackman's) were able to outsprint the others and finish first and second, respectively, with Bruce McWhorter taking third. The Masters 35-44, 45+ and Women's categories all started together, as there were not enough riders to start separate categories. Mike Daley and Bill Simmons (Music Maker) attacked on the downhill from the start and Tana Stone (Northshore) bridged to them. But they failed to notice the cones at the turn and took their lead up the wrong road. Realizing their mistake, they turned back to rejoin the pack which was unre-ceptive to their plea that they be allowed to reestablish their gap. So, they attacked again, this time with Ron Roy. Stone again bridged up. This group stayed together until the final lap, when Daley and Simmons dropped Stone and Roy. Simmons and Daley crossed the finish with hands joined with Simmons accorded the win. Roy and Stone finished together with Roy winning the Masters 45+ and Stone winning the Women's race. Especially cycling writers. I guess it's contagious. I tried to take a few days from my real job and also a weekend of races. Well, the few days weren't enough. I came home too soon, unsatisfied. The R & R was needed but at the expense of race promoter Ron Lindley and his Dinotrax event. Not enough time for fun and a promoter is peeved at me. Some vacation. So I called an editorial meeting. I wanted something different from the next race I covered. I want it first person reporting. Blood and guts, anaerobic death defying reporting from the "Hurl Ride" in the Uinta Mountains on the Evanston, Wyoming side. Paul Knopf was taking on the dirt after another successful High Uintas Classic Stage Race. I want the readers to feel, taste, smell and see what the "Hurl Ride" is all about. And none of this sissy stuff either. I want athletic, industrial strength hurl! That's what I needed. A story I could sink my teeth into. Hmm. An appetizing thought. Aaaaaaooooooooffhh! Excuse me. But not to worry. It was just that sissy stuff. Feeling better I dusted off the trusty M2 and tossed it in the back of the pickup. No, I wasn't going to waste my time racing. I've been a slug all summer, chasing quotes and photos instead of chasing down breaks. I was going to ride the course in reverse. After all I wanted something different. I got to the finish a little before the Pros and Experts were starting. Plenty of time to cruise down from 9,700 feet towards the action. I'll get to the first person stuff on the ride up to the truck. The course was nearly all double track and, judging from the long descent, one of those pesky, relentless climbs that never seem to stop. Just shoot me, please! Dusting off the bike was only the beginning. My riding skills were a bit rusty but nothing a few bunny hops couldn't fix. Then the first stream crossing (the last for the racers) and my main objective was to make it through to the other side instead of coming to an abrupt stop midstream to cool off the old tootsies. No, I made it to the other side of the stream, thank you very much. Like the old saying "It's just like riding a bike." Oh. Now I get it! Then some more rocky double track before another water crossing. Only this one has an audience. Better stop and psyche up for this one. Shot the breeze with the crew and slipped by telling them I was Editor of cycling utah. Way to go stupid. Now you MUST clean this wider stream otherwise your credibility is shot in the saddle. Well, I said farewell and rode off in search of that elusive cover shot. As soon as my front wheel hit H20 I saw a rock that would guarantee a bad review. So I pulled up on the handlebars to clear the obstacle. The pull had a kick of an over and under 20-gauge shotgun and the front wheel did a Flipper and blasted out of the water carrying me to the other side. I couldn't believe my dumb luck, er, I mean my rediscovered savvy bike handling skills. I continued my search for the uphill that the NORBA official claimed was some of the toughest he'd seen. With gravity on my side I was fearless, ready to take on this formidable challenger. My body English made short work of the rocky trail. Well, almost. It seems some arrogant French rock did an escargot on my Specialized Ground Control. Pardon! Hey, no problem. I've got another tube, patch kit, tire irons and tire pump. I'll be back! A flick of the quick release freed the wheel and I opened my seat pack to get my life support equipment. OK, come out life support equipment. Where are you? Gee, it seems my tire irons got fed up with the rough ride and escaped into the seat pack on my road bike. No problem! I've got keys. Success! The bead is broken and I only have to straighten the house key when I get home. Good thing I didn't use the truck door or ignition key, huh? This riding thing is coming back. I get out the tube and expect the patch kit to fall out too. Hmm. No patch kit. No problem, at least I've got a spare tube. Out with the old and in with the new (or at least replacement). Undo the strap holding the pump to the frame, pump a little iron on the Mt. Zephal (French for flat tire) and I'll still have time to reach the steep and rocky before the racers. Pump, pump, pump. A simple process to inflate an inner tube. Pump, pump, pump, ride. Only the scenario was pump, pump, pump . . . ad infinitim. Tire pumps aren't rocket science. Plunger, gasket and nozzle. Presta is pasta to most cyclists, right? It is in my house. How about yours? I stride up to the Jeep Wagoneer, confident Fll score some pasta. "You've got about five miles to go," he said trying to encourage me. "No thanks," I replied in a pleasant, happy-go-lucky way. "I'd rather have a prima vera pump. My French pump failed me. * * "I always buy American," he said. He then showed me his aerosal can of tire goo that's a quick fix for emergencies like mine. It's the American way. I didn't have to look at the nozzle to know it was a Schraeder valve, but I looked anyway. As I did, Dan Graves rode past, comfortably in the lead. "Dan! Turn around and come back so I can get your picture!" I pleaded. Yea, right. He was in the Dan zone, the big-ring zone he's been in lately. I was a gnat buzzing in his ear. His solution. Ride faster. That's great! My bike riding skills coming back to me in a big way and there's no room left for my photo skills. Did I just define "Pin Head?!" I'll pass on your American goo and continue walking. But thanks anyway. Second water crossing. The audience sans presta. Trudge on to the state line. No wonder. I'm in Wyoming! Presta valves must be against the law or something like that. As soon as I get back to Utah, I'm sure to get a presta revelation. I was back in Utah but the state-line aid station was not "the place" for presta. Who better to come to my rescue than a fellow roady. Jay Swenson did indeed have a presta valve Silca pump. Now that's Italian. It was in the trunk of his car, a couple miles up the trail. I was elated. I found presta. I could relax. My photo abilities returned as my focus widened. I snapped Blayne Corwin going through the water. The look on his face suggested that he knew I found presta. He accelerated, going on to win his first Expert Vet race. I feel a part of his experience somehow. At this point the miles were secondary. There is presta ahead. Tally ho! The first water crossing. Person in truck, "You've got about three miles to go." "Cool," I replied merrily. I didn't want your presta anyway. Mine awaits in the Cavalier up ahead. A GM car never looked so good, and a Chevy at that. Presta lies in wait under the steel blanket that Detroit built. And it's Italian! Oh, the anticipation. And the pump was practically BRAND NEW! The rubber hose still had the white lettering on it. The rubber gasket in the shiny brass head mated with the presta valve. Water gushed from the tire as the inflating tube pushed out evidence of the two stream crossings left behind. I wasn't concerned. I had presta. And I still had a flat! Lesson 45 of mountain bike riding. Don't walk your flat tire over rocky terrain for several miles. Of course it was the tube's fault. Stupid latex! Now if Jay is a true cyclist he'll have patch kits everywhere except in the seat pack of his bicycle. He scores! This Jay is quite a guy. The patch kit is BRAND NEW! The glue in my patch kit has long ago lost all semblance of liquid. I usually hate it when the glue gushes out after piercing the tube. This time I spread it all over my body, saving just enough to fix the escargo that French rock gave me. It's encouraging that I remember how to patch a tube. It holds air and I'm off. The final few miles are a joy. The icing on the cake approaches from behind. A racer begins to overtake me. We start to race each other. He passes and gives me a look that says "I like escargot." That's all it took. I dig deep, jam it onto the big ring and hammer him into the ground. (The fact I had ridden three miles to his 26 is irrelevant). Paul Knopf cheered as I crossed the line and others joined in. Life is good. My patch kit is restocked. This is not quite the story I had in mind during the editorial staff meeting. But hey! It's a first person account, riding on happy trails. The Bicycle Parking Solution 4 or 6 position bike racks suitable for home or business. But the standings incorrectly listed another rider as placing first.
