"Year one was about survival, year two was about compe ng and this season, we expect to take it to the next level," Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "I think we have improved in a bunch of diff erent areas. Our size, skill and versa lity are all areas that we have greatly improved." A er capturing two postseason victories for the fi rst me since 2009 en route to its fi rst Pac-12 tournament semifi nal berth, Utah has added six newcomers to a sophomore nucleus consis ng of Jordan Loveridge, Brandon Taylor, Dakarai Tucker and Jeremy Olsen. "Our depth was another area of concern last year and we addressed that in the off season, Krystkowiak added. "If you combine that with all of our condi oning in the off season, then you can expect a quicker pace with more athle cism this season. We are commi ed to pressure this year. We want to put heat on teams." Jordan Loveridge impressed in his fi rst year with the Utes fi nishing in the top 10 in the league in rebounding and top 25 in scoring. He put the rest of college basketball on no ce from the get-go as he grabbed a double-double in his fi rst collegiate game The versa le forward also shot 39 percent from three-point land, good for seventh in the league. "Jordan's work ethic has been outstanding," Krystkowiak said. "He leads by example and to know he's only a sophomore is very exci ng. He dropped weight but retained his strength, something that will benefi t him during league play." Brandon Taylor took over the point guard spot midway through the season. He burst on the scene with 19 points and a season-high six assists in Utah's fi rst Pac-12 road win in program history at Washington. From there, he started every game and fi nished second in the Pac-12 in three-point shoo ng. "Brandon is the best shooter on our team and someone I feel comfortable taking the shot with the game on the line," Krystkowiak added. "He is maturing into one of our team leaders because he doesn't quit and is always Brandon Taylor moved into the star ng role during Pac-12 play and grabbed the reigns at the point guard spot. The freshman averaged double fi gures in the Pac-12 Tournament and fi nished second in the league in three-point fi eld goal percentage. Jordan Loveridge burst on the scene in 2012-13 and fi nished among the top 10 in the Pac-12 in rebounding and three-point fi eld goal percentage. He had one of the best seasons ever for a Utah freshman averaging 12.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg. W W W . U T A H U T E S . C O M 23 2 0 1 3 - 1 4 S E A S O N U T A H M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L Season Outlook ready to step up and accept his role. I think we are going to play him a li le more at the shoo ng guard to alleviate some of the pressure that he faced last season." Dakarai Tucker scored a career-high in his fi rst collegiate ou ng and earned valuable experience by playing in 25 games as a true freshman. Lenz, the lone senior on this year's ou it, played in all but one game a er transferring in from Arizona Western College and started a couple contests at power forward for the Utes. "Dakarai is the most athle c player on our team, just full of energy with a great work ethic," Krystkowiak said. "I think he gained confi dence this off season in his shot so that will benefi t him this year. Renan is our lone senior and our most improved player. He's in much be er shape than last season and he does all the li le things that might not be on the stat sheet. He constantly works hard in the post and on his mid-range game." Olsen and Bachynski each returned from LDS missions and contributed right away for the Utes. Olsen played in 21 of the team's fi nal 22 games last season while Bachynski was a starter during non-conference play, notching a 22-point, 16-rebound performance. "Jeremy is a true back-to-the-basket player," Krystkowiak added. "He is light years ahead with his condi oning than this point last season. He has really pushed himself in that area and if you combine that with last year's experience and his knack for scoring in the low post, we're excited to see what he can do. Dallin is a high-energy type of player. He has the size and pure athle c ability to succeed and if he con nues to play hard, good things will come. Xan Ricke s is another solid, steady hard worker that understands his role. He's a team player that always provides energy." Utah added some talented new players to the roster that should be able to contribute immediately and have a profound impact on the team this season. Delon Wright was named his conference's player of the year a er leading San Francisco City College to a 26-2 record and the California State Championship as a freshman. Kenneth Ogbe hails from Germany where he played in one of the country's top leagues. He was a member of the German na onal squad that par cipated in the Nike Global Challenge and German High School Na onal Championships. "Delon and Kenneth are both versa le, skilled playmakers"," Krystkowiak stated. "Delon always seems to make the right play because of his court awareness. He is a player that understands the game and that helps Jeremy Olsen returned from his LDS mission and by the end of the season had become one of Utah's most dependable post players. The sophomore will be counted on more than ever with the deaprture of Jason Washburn. Dakarai Tucker is one of many long, athle c wings that Utah now has in its rota on. Tucker played in 25 games as a freshman and was one of the best defenders for the Utes. 24 2 0 1 3 - 1 4 M E D I A G U I D E U T A H M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L 2 0 1 3 - 1 4 S E A S O N Season Outlook him defensively also. We really think Kenneth could be a "diamond in the rough". He's a coach's dream because he loves being a student-athlete." Ahmad Fields and Parker Van Dyke are also backcourt addi ons for the Utes. Fields averaged 17 points per game at Massanu en Military Academy in Virginia and then suited up for DC Assault, one of the most renowned AAU programs in the country. Van Dyke is a local product and was the 4A Player of the Year according to the Salt Lake Tribune a er leading the state in scoring with 24.7 points per game. "Ahmad has the length to really make plays defensively," Krystkowiak added. "He is one of those unique players who likes to guard. Parker is someone who could fl ourish in this system with his mid-range game. He's improving daily and his compe ve demeanor on the court will help him." In the post, Utah brought in two players, Marko Kovacevic and Princeton Onwas. Onwas earned a reputa on as being one of the most explosive wings in the junior college ranks earning All-Region honors at Navarro College. Kovacevic was among the leading rebounders and most effi cient shooters in NJCAA Region IX. "Princeton can get to the free-throw line due to his strength and his quick fi rst step," Krystkowiak said. "He will help us push the pace and his physical presence will allow him to play both forward spots. Marko is a skilled post player. He's cra y in the low block and is a sound, solid passer." These players will represent the Utes as they embark upon their third season not only under Krystkowiak, but also in the historically outstanding Pac-12 Conference. The conference is currently home to six na onal champions (UCLA, Arizona, Utah, California, Stanford and Oregon), most in Division I, and UCLA has won 11 individual tles, more than any other program. To complement its standard of excellence on the court, the Pac-12 Conference is doing the same off the court. The Pac-12 Network allows Utah basketball to be seen all over the world. In fact, 29 of Utah's 30 games will be na onally televised on the Pac-12 Networks, as well as Fox Sports 1 or on the ESPN family of networks. In non-conference ac on, the Runnin' Utes will play 11 of their 12 games in the Huntsman Center. Utah will host an early-season tournament in November for the second-straight year and host BYU in the annual Deseret First Duel against on Dec. 14. Renan Lenz has transformed his body over the summer and entered the preseason as one of the most talked about Utes. A er a year under Coach Krystkowiak's tutelage, big things are expected from the Brazilian. Dallin Bachynski started strong last season scoring 22 points and 16 rebounds in an early-season contest. His produc vity in the post is something the Utes are looking for even more this year. |
