Show www.UtahUtes.com 15 | 2007-08 Utah Tennis Men's Outlook After finishing 12-11 last year and going 2-4 in confer-ence play, the Utes are ready to pick up the pace. Under the direction of head coach F.D. Robbins, the squad will be striding towards a Mountain West Conference title and earning a national ranking in the 2007-08 campaign. "We have everybody back in the lineup," Robbins said. "I anticipate a successful year after the team gained a lot of experience last year. There is a lot of depth in our conference, but we will be in the hunt." Robbins, who is in his 22nd season as the head coach at his alma mater, has tallied a 280-253 overall record since taking over the program in 1987. Before ending his collegiate career in 1972, Robbins achieved All- America status twice. Robbins will have to work this year without the services of Graeme Cox. Cox was named Mountain Region Assistant coach of the year last season and won many awards as a player. After 10 years on the coaching staff and four years as a player, Cox resigned from his duties for personal reasons. "Graeme was a great assistant coach, and with him on the staff it was like having two head coaches," Robbins said. "I really appreciate all of the good things Graeme has done for Utah Tennis over the years." Utah's new assistant coach is former Ute Roeland Brateanu. After a brief stint on the professional tour, he has continued to work in the athletics industry and has been coaching on the junior tour in 2007. "In trying to find an assistant coach, I looked for some-one that has been involved with the program and un-derstands the way we work," says Robbins. "Roeland is excited to be here. The guys have transitioned well with him and are able to respect and listen to what he says. He has done well with the switch from teammate and friend to being their coach." The Utes' lineup is led by senior captains Zach Ganger and Miron Mann, and junior Wes Hancock. After compiling a 27-12 overall record last year, Ganger finished the year ranked No. 57 in the nation. In the fall, Ganger has compiled a 10-3 record with two of his losses coming to No. 1 Somdev Devvarman and No. 5 Luke Shields. "Zach is one of the strongest No. 1 players in the conference. He had a successful season last year and this year received a No. 22 preseason national rank-ing," says Robbins. "Zach has set the standard for the team, and it is his year to shine as a senior. I expect him to step up and lead the team with Miron, as they are co-captains for the second year running." Mann, an Ontario, Canada native, sat out the fall season, but will be ready to play in dual matches starting in January. Mann sat out his junior year due to shoulder surgery and is entering his fifth year at the U. "Miron will be a vital key as he competes at the No. 2 spot. Miron's biggest weapon on the court is his serve and competitiveness," states Robbins. "He is one of the team captains again and plays the part of the ‘rah-rah' guy to get the team fired up." Hancock has shown improvement each year. The junior went 15-14 in singles play and primarily teamed up with Timmy Allin in doubles play at the No. 3 spot. In fall play, Hancock reached the finals of the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament, losing to teammate Zach Ganger in the finals. "The better player he faces, the better Wes tends to play," Robbins said. "As he becomes more comfort-able coming to the net and putting pressure on his opponents, I think he will be more competitive. He had a great fall showing, so that should give him the confidence he needs for the dual matches." Allin, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, ended last season with a 17-12 overall record in singles play, mainly at the No.6 spot. Together with Wes Hancock, the Ute doubles team compiled a 15-5 record at the No. 3 spot. "Timmy is the fastest guy on the team, and really uses that to his advantage. He is a competitive all-court player with a strong volley," Robbins said. Othman Zerouali-Ouariti, a sophomore from Montreal, Canada, returns this year with experience under his belt. Already in the fall, the Ute has posted a 7-3 record after competing in the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament and the Mountain Regional Tournament. "We expect Othman to be a strong component of the team's success in the singles lineup this year. He is a good baseline player, but we are trying to transition him into being an all-court player and have him come to the net more," says Robbins. In dual match play last year, Amit Maharaj posted a 5-1 record at the No. 6 slot. During fall play this year, the Ute posted a three set win over Weber State's Fabio Mancarella. "All parts of Amit's game have improved immensely," Robbins said. "He also pulls hard for his teammates even when he is not playing. That in itself speaks loudly of his character." Sophomore Jason Smits played well in the fall. The Ute fell in the round of 16 in the regional tournament in three sets to Denver's Niklas Persson. Last year, Smits ended the season with a 15-13 overall singles record, and a 19-8 overall doubles record. "Jason is a strong baseline player. He relies on his ground strokes, but we are trying to move him forward more to make him that much harder to beat," says Robbins. As a redshirt freshman, Stephen Jacobs is looking to make his mark in the lineup. During the fall, the coaching staff paired Jacobs up with Maharaj in doubles play. The duo posted a 3-3 record in the fall, but competed well in each outing. "Stephen has made large improvements. He will be competing for a spot in the lineup this year," said Robbins. "He is a good serve and volley player. He is learning to stay calm on the court." Coming in as the only freshman this year is John Taylor. He soared in doubles play with Ganger. The two posted a 7-2 record during the fall. "John has a strong volley and likes coming to the net," Robbins said. "We are currently working on his serve to get him ready for the spring dual matches." The Utes played in the Utah Intercollegiate Tourna-ment and the Mountain Regional Tournament in the fall. Utah dominated in the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament winning the main draw singles, consola-tion singles and doubles. Utah also did very well at the regional tournament. Ganger led the way by making it to the semifinals in singles and doubles. "We have a balanced line-up," Robbins said. "If we stay healthy, we will be tough to beat this year." Robbins has tallied a 280-253 record since taking over in 1987. Robbins led the tennis squad to Western Athletic Conference championships in 1987, '89 and '90. In 1989, he was honored with Utah's Don Reddish Coach of the Year Award. The Utes finished the 2007 season with a 12-11 over-all record and tied for fourth in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes' ranking by Intercollegiate Tennis Association peaked in March at No. 61 last season. Zach Ganger was invited to compete in the 2007 NCAA Championships at the end of the season. At Utah, Robbins has coached three ITA All-Academic teams, seven Academic All-America players and two ITA Regional Players of the Year. He has also coached All-Americans Jeff Robbins, Christian Svensson and Greg Holmes. Under Robbins' tutelage, Holmes also captured the 1982 NCAA singles title. As a collegiate player at Utah, Robbins had an impressive resume. He played the No. 1 singles position all four years and reached the NCAA tournament quarterfinals in 1970. He also won the National Intercollegiate Indoor Cham-pionships and achieved All-America status twice. Robbins graduated from the University of Utah in 1972 with a degree in finance. After completing his collegiate career, Robbins played on the pro circuit and ranked as high as 20th in the nation in singles and 10th in doubles. He com-peted in the U.S. Open three different times, reaching the third round once. He holds career victories over Roscoe Tanner, Dick Stockton, Eric Van Dillen, Bob McKinley, Tom Gorman and Sandy Mayer. He also was a member of the United States Davis Cup reserve team. While at Olympus High School, Robbins was the Utah high school singles champion and the second-ranked player in the nation in the 18 singles and doubles divisions. He was one of two players to represent the United States at the International Junior Sunshine Cup and was also a competitor for the National Junior Davis Cup team from 1966-71. In the 16-and-under division, Robbins was ranked fourth nationally. He and his partner won the National Junior Doubles title and ended up ranked second nationally. He won the U.S. National Junior Grasscourts, U.S. National Junior Hardcourts and the U.S. National Junior Westerns.
