Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe and Ogden boast th e greatest ski trajectories in the world. It is possible for the world 's greatest jumpe rs to leap better than 200 feet on all of the hills at the four points. On January I of this year Alf Engen leaped 247 feet at Salt Lake and followed this performance with a jump of 243 feet at Big Pines, near Los Angeles. At Lake Tahoe Engen turned in a performa nce of 2 10 feet on a 218 foot hill. Einar Fredbo jumped 203 feet for the best perform ance at Ogden. Alf Engen is the nation al champion in the professional class and the greatest and most cons istent performe r in the ski sport. Lars Haugen, seven times a national champion, and th e oldest performer in the business, recently jumped 231 feet at Los Angeles. The professional contingent is consid e red the greatest ski aggregation ever banded togethe r. Alton, Manager Ogden Carnival Alf Engen of Salt Lake, former Norwegian champion, was awarded the national championship and his 243- ~ foot jump at Big Pines, Los Angeles, officially recognized as the national reco rd. Next year, the champion will find the t.itle quest a harder one, with the diversified schedule of tournaments. ,I ALF ENGEN t::fLF ENGEN of Salt Lake City has been officially crowned ~_l the National Professional Champion for 1931. Without a doubt he has given Salt Lake the most effective advertisment during the ' last few months t han we have had in years. 1 _j 'Slick Sliders' Take ~workout' On Ecker Hill 'i I \ S .A.LT LAKE team of famed skimen took their first workout of the season at the Ecker slide up Parley's canyon yesterday and in-dicated that they are again ready for a big season on the "slick slides., The j umpers confined t heir erfotrs to the small take-oft, perfecting their form before they attempt the higher and more dan· ger ous jump. Alf Engen, king of the ski-artists proved that he was ready for another big yea.r when he leaped 165 feet from the low takeoff for the longest record that has been made off that platform. Some Good LeaP•• Sverre Engen, Alf's younger brother, markeu up several l eaps ot 140 feet. Stdfen Trogstad and Halvor Hvalatad also made some very fine 1 eaps. Calmer Andreasen, amateur champion, jumped 135-!eet to lead 11 the simon-pure athletes. Frank, Jlm and Lawrence Hasmussen and Nord Nordqu ist also did some fine work. The lightly packed snow resulted in many tumbles but no injuries except bruises which are as much a part o! skiing as they are o! football. A large crowd was on hand for the inaugural meet. The big meet Of the season is scheduled !or New Year's daY. Officers of the Utah Ski club are making extensive preparations for the affair. |
