Show runnin ute basketball What a year! And what a pleasure it was to watch this year's team perform. They generated a new-found enthusiasm among Ute fans,- sometimes the feeling bordered on fanaticism. As the season began, the Utes were unranked in the national polls, but their habit of winning soon began to attract attention. They dominated the Ute Classic with Tom Chambers garnishing Most Valuable Player honors. Next they crushed reigning NCAA Champion Louisville to improve their record to 7-0 going into the Far West Classic, anticipating a battle with then third ranked Oregon State. It was not to be. The Utes suffered a one point upset to Drake in the opening round of the tournament and finished fourth. After that loss the Utes went on a tear, winning their next 14 games, including heart-stopping victories against Wyoming and DYU. With their record standing at 21-1, the Runnin' Utes rose to #6 in the national polls. 38 |
