Show Uj * 'iTHE UTAH SYMPHONY-ITS TWENTY-FIRST SEASONMarked by a tasteful, though cautiously planned, program of "table"offerings, the Utah Symphony Orchestra, under the able guidance ofMaurice Abravanel presented more to Utah audiences than perhapsthey appreciated. And though the greater numerical tastes ofthese listeners appeared to dominate the repertoire selection,Abravanel was successful in arranging a few "asides" wherein werepresented on one occasion, contemporaries compositions and onthe other a lost Baroque masterpiece.Highlights of the season were the appearance of such musical greatsas Pierre Monteaux, Nathan Milstein, and Zara Nelsova, or sucha notable pianist as Van Cliburn. Performances ranged from Bachto Schoenberg with a strong representation from the House ofRomantics. Memorable among the latter mentioned was a rousingexecution of the Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and a monumental readingof the Brahms Symphony No. 1 which climaxed the 1960-61 season in theSalt Lake Tabernacle.196 |
