Abstract This document discusses the technical progress of two of the U. S. Department of Energy's Innovative Clean Coal Technology (lCCT) Projects demonstrating advanced combustion techniques for the reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from wall-fired and tangentially-fired (T-fired) boilers. The primary objective of the demonstrations is to determine the long-term effects of commercially available low NOx combustion technologies on NOx emissions and boiler performance. A target of achieving 50 percent NOx reduction using combustion modifications has been established for each project. Discussed herein are the instrumentation. the retrofit technologies, and the testing efforts. Specifically, the following low NOx combustion methods are being demonstrated: Advanced Overfire Air (AOFA) and low NOx burners for wall-fired boilers; and the Low NOx Concentric Firing System (LNCFS) Levels I, II, and IIl for T-fired boilers.
