Department of Commerce National Technical Information Service One Source. One Search. One Solution. Providing Permanent, Easy Access to U.S. Government Information The National Technical Information Service is the Nation's largest repository and disseminator of government-initiated scientific, technical, engineering, and related business information. The NTIS collection includes almost 3 million information products in a variety of formats: electronic download, online access, DVD, CD-ROM, magnetic tape, diskette, multimedia, microfiche and paper. Search the NTIS Database from 1990 forward More than 600,000 government research information products have been added to the NTIS collection since 1990. All bibliographic entries for those products are searchable on the NTIS Web site at www.ntis.gov. Download Publications (1997 • Present) NTIS provides the full text of many reports received since 1997 as downloadable PDF files. When an agency stops maintaining a report on its Web site, NTIS still offers a downloadable version. There is a fee for each download of most publications. Graphical Han/Hachine Communications Prepared by .. , .....-- -" Suonnary During the reporting period we have established the graphics laboratory and constructed a number of programming tools for use as aids in future work. Two projects, the half-tone picture generation and a hydrodynamic application, have reached demonstrable state. Half-tone Drawing The objective of this effort is to cre'ate half-tone perspective drawings of three-dimensional objects described in a data structure. Capability to produce photograph quality pictures of objects illuminated by incident light showing appropriate shading and shadows is the objective. The first such pictures have now been successfully produced using the UNIVAC 1108 computer with the PDP-8 and cathode ray display equipment. The initial pictures were of simp~e objects such as cubes and tetrahedrons and were of high quality. The algorithm used is suitable for producing pictures of complex objects which will be done during the next period. Of particular interest is that the amount of computing required increases only slowly (less than linearly) with the number of components in the objects pictured. This is an important distinction with other hidden-line, hidden-surface algorithms. This result is achieved through the use of the techniques of sorting and scanning. Further effort on this task will be expended to extend the -1- flexibility of illumination and in the examination of techniques to produce half-tone motion pictures in real time. A technical report has been prepared On this work and an article has been submitted to the Fall Joint Computer Conference. Hydrodynamics We have demonstrated graphical display of a two dimensional solution of the Navier Stokes equations of fluid flow with arbitrary boundary conditions. In the near future these boundary conditions will be specified graphically. A report on this work will be prepared during the summer. Tools and Techniques The UNIVAC 1108 computing system has been installed and is fully operational. The laboratory for the research project is located near the computer center; excellent communication facilities exist between the laboratory and the computer center. The graphics sub-system including the PDP-8, IDI display equipment, and the half-tone display equipment is connected to the 1108 by means of an 1108 data channel. A UNIVAC 1004 for conventional use of the 1108 has also been installed in the laboratory and is connected to a second 1108 data channel. For convenience in using this equipment the laboratory is also equipped with a teleprinter slaved to the 1108 console printer so that laboratory personnel may be fully informed of the 1108 state. The executive system of the ~108 (Exec II) has been modified to provide file storage on Fastrand and program interrupt and drum swap to expedite real time use of the 1108 by the research group. It is -2- expected that the new executive system (Exec 8) will provide more sophisticated real time service and file system at some time in the future. A number of software facilities have been developed to support the research. A graphics monitor for the 1108/PDP-8 system has been constructed. A set of generalized plotting routines for the graphical terminal which may be used by 1108 programs has been developed. An assembly language conversational debugging facility (DDT) has been developed. Through the use of an 1108 simulator which operates on the 1108 computer \ve have provided elementary dynamic programming aids which we expect to develop further in the future. A TRAC language system for text manipulation has been developed. A set of macros for implementation of list structures is also nearing completion. An important tool which, it is expected, will be operational this summer is a syntax directed interpreter of very general capability. Many uses for this tool are expected, but it will find its first use in the architectural design system which is under construction. Major effort has been begun on several new application oriented • projects, including architectural design, dynamic cardiac pattern recognition, interactive nuclear reactor design, and computer aided instruction.
