Abstract |
The coke oven gas (COG) which is generated in the dry distillation of coal in the coke-making process is a principal fuel gas in the steelworks. Its main components H2 and CH4 are expected to find increasing use as feedstocks for chemical applications and in city gas. For chemical and other applications, it is necessary to reduce or eliminate the various impurities found in COG, the most important of which is the sulfur (S) component. However the COG refining process now adopted are not capable of eliminating organic sulfur components (CS2,COS) from COG. In Kawasaki Steel Corp., at Mizushima Works, a part of produced COG is supplied as the main source for city gas. In this case, the concentration of sulfur in the gas is also required to be reduced as low as possible. We therefore investigated a dry packed-bed method of removing organic sulfurs, used at a near room temperature and normal pressure. |
