Show APPLICATIONS OF RETICULATED CERAMICS FOR LOW NOx INFRARED EMITTERS AND POLLUTION ABATEMENT DEVICES by: ' Truett B. Sweeting, Laurie A. Strom Hi-Tech Ceramics, Inc. Alfred, New York 14802 ABSTRACT Reticulated ceramics (three-dimensional "web-like" porous ceramics) offer an ideal structure for combustion of gas-air mixtures. Combustion in these porous media have shown results of increased flame speeds, high volumetric release rates, and low NOx emissions. These unique materials have demonstrated high turndown ratios and stable combustion with extremely lean mixtures. The theory of combustion in these cost effective, high temperature materials will be briefly discussed. The use of reticulated ceramics as infrared burners, compact volumetric burners, and flow through heat curtains will be reviewed. Applications in waste incineration ~ill also be presented. The work described in this paper was not funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and therefore the contents do not necessarily reflect the views of the Agency and no official endorsement should be inferred. INTRODUCTION Reticulated ceramics are materials consisting of two continuous phases, the ceramic and porosity. These structures are produced by a replication process using polyurethane foams as precursors. Typical densities of the final product range |
