Abstract Currently, many hydrocarbons classified as hazardous waste are disposed of by incineration. Despite high average residence times, temperatures, and mixing rates in incinerators, emissions can exhibit excessive CO concentrations as well as unacceptable levels of partially oxidized wastes. Proper control of the oxygen level by enrichment may alleviate these problems. Some results of an experimental and theoretical inquiry which may elucidate the mechanisms of oxygen-enriched incineration are presented here. Mixtures of chlorinated C2-hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and chlorine are reacted with mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen in a Bunsen-burner type premixed flame. The level of oxygen in the oxidizer is varied to examine the effect of oxygen enrichment Premixed flames of mixtures of ethylene with molecular chlorine are shown to exhibit double flames as observed with some chlorinated hydrocarbons. This similarity was used to study incineration conditions for various H/Cl and cIa ratios. Oxygen enrichment was found to increase the flame speeds of both reaction zones. In addition, oxygen enrichment resulted in extending the flammability limits of the second-stage flame. TIle overall activation energy of the second-stage flame was found to be larger than the activation energy of the firststage flame, making the second-stage flame, which is critical to complete destruction of toxic emissions, more prone to extinction through temperature fluctuations and flame stretch (turbulence).
