Win s c h e I CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY Research & Development 4000 Brownsvi lie Road Library, PA 15129 This paper describes lab and pilot scale experimental work done in support of the 105 MWe Coolside process demonstration at Ohio Edison's Edgewater Station. The demonstration project sponsors include DOE, the State of Ohio, Ohio Edison, Babcock and Wilcox, and Consolidation Coal Company (Consol). The Coolside process, scheduled for demonstration in early 1989, is an in-duct sorbent injection technology for 502 control. The process involves hydrated lime injection upstream of water spray flue gas humidification in a utility duct. The S02 capture and sorbent utilization can be improved through the injection of a water soluble add itive, such as sodium hydroxide, in the humidification water. Lab, pilot and field testing has shown S02 removals up to 80%. Economic analyses indicate particularly attractive 502 control costs in retrofit appl ications. As part of its participation in the Edgewater project, Con sol conducted experimenta l work to select candidate sorbents, to develop a test program, and to determine the chemical and physical characteristics of Coolside waste. Pilot scale (0.' MWe) Coolside tests of once-through and recycle operation were conducted to develop a performance data base for the demonstration. Based on the pi lot test results, two commercial hydrated limes were selected for use in the Edgewater demonstration tests. The waste characterization data indicate that the solid waste is suitable for landfill disposal in terms of compressive strength, permeabi lity, reactivity with water, and the concentrations of trace elements, sulfate, and total dissolved solids in the leachates. |
