Show THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH 89 JOURNAL MESSAGE Undergraduate research and creative work has become an essential component of a university educa-tion. The University of Utah has long been at the forefront, with excellent programs and an infinite number of opportunities for our students. Excellent faculty, top notch facilities, Research I and research extensive status allow our students to be leaders. Our mission encourages all students at the U to be a part of the rich experience of research or creative work. Statistics show research supports class work but also provides the necessary experience for graduate school and the post undergraduate career. As years pass I've advised and assisted hundreds of students. I'm continually amazed at the brilliance and excitement a research or creative experience can generate. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to our talented and dedicated faculty without whose hard work and commitment none of this would be possible. Your knowledge, time and encouragement are the greatest contributors to the success of our students. I would also like to thank ARUP Directors Mark Astill and Harry Hill M.D. for collaborating with UROP to provide undergraduates the unique opportunity to work with the outstanding scientists at ARUP laboratories. 2010 was a banner year beginning with Research Posters on the Hill at the Utah State legislature in Jan-uary. Twenty students presented at the Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research February 20th at SUU in Cedar City and in April, a record 39 students presented findings at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research at the University of Montana, Missoula. Our campus wide Undergraduate Research Symposium drew 300 student presenters ranging from Ballet to Archaeology to cancer research. Countless students from across the disciplines presented and published at professional con-ferences. The University of Utah is well represented by our undergraduates across the country and abroad. I cannot express the joy to hear from student after student sharing the news of acceptance to medical school, law school and other graduate programs. As the class of 2010 achieved graduate school goals, incoming freshmen arrive, eager to fill the gaps and achieve their own dreams. My life has been enriched by the passion and determination they exemplify. It's a humbling experience and has given me great pleasure to provide students the tools for such future success. Finally, I must thank the faculty and these brilliant young men and women for giving me the honor and pleasure to serve them the past eight years.
