The doctor a nd nurses there did everything possible , but it was decided that a transfer by plane to a larger hospital would be neeessary . Leona stayed with her baby until the arrangements could be completed. It seems she not only "helped the nurses ll but amazed the doctor by her knowledge of IV and other therapeutic procedures . Her ever-growing circle of listeners were amazed at her relation of what we do at "our clinic at the Mission" and how Navahos come from hundreds of miles away for treatment, and ho\'l sometimes at specia l clinic we have to feed 75 or 100 of them,as they come from so far away . The remarkable thing about Letona's sad story is what has gone on t~ within her. Sixteen years ago she brought in a baby , very sick. We told her that he m~s t be taken to a hespital. At that time we had little beyond aspirin and merc~urochrome and adhesive bandages. The child vias del:!ydilated , undernourished almost to star vation and seriously infected systemically. Leona , not i mpressed, would have nothing of any white man's hospital. If we would treat the child, wbe would accept that, but no pale-face shenannigans ! All sorts of Navaho medicine had be en tried , but to no effect. OUr powers of persuasion were equally ineffective, and the boy died, and was buried high on the side of a canyon amid the ~age and ~oc ks. ;;. I 1- 'lHf -tttdV ~.) A~frn'4 111;"0' 1<. We wish we could put a happy ending to the story, but the baby died of pneumonia a f ter ten days' tre a tment at the larger hOSPital, was flown back and buried with her brother in the canyon. Such help as man can give came quickly. Even at the Cortez hospital when the staff found out that Lemna had lost virtually all her possessions -- food, bedding , saddles -- gifts of farm produce began to come in. The radio station, KVFC, broadcast t he story. The Bluff LDS ("Mormon") bishop headed a committee to raise funds and clothing; hay for the stock and bedding for the family also came in. ~ ROUTINE We scolded ourselves, several Newsletters ago, for writing about routine. But there are duties that have to be done, most of them ~oyous and rewarding , some necessary and tiresome , and they don t make good "news copy".
