Box 5, Monument Va-ley, Utah 84536 Tel. 801-727-3291 Messages Nos. 1-27 ava ilabl~ on request .. THE NEWS FOR THE YEAR: We hope we may be able to add a "Stop Press" news item to this message - that a priest who is shortly coming to visit us will feel called to stay and continue - and, please God, build on - the work of bringing the Good News to the Navajo People in this area. For myself , I must say that life goes on , one day much like the last, with all but endless opportunity of serving the Lord's People. One way in which I have ceased to serve them is the loaning of money -- for years past I have, when I could, loaded from $5 to maybe $60 or more, a1:l with a promise to pay back IIpretty soon", or more specifically, "next month"; Some time ago I did some arithmetic, and found that the total of unpaid loans stood at well over $4,000., and I thought it was time to change tactics. Offers of pawn I have refused, as I have no license as a pawnbroker, and besides there is a danger of losing, . breaking, or having the treasure stolen. I simply tell petitioners that when the recipients of loans start seriously to "come across", I may resume my former policy, within limits. They seem to have found other sources. 'Tis well, for as Polonius warned his son Laertes, "loan oft loses both itself and friend"! We have been blessed with many visitors this summer -- lack of space (and other considerations) prevent my naming them all, but I think you would be interested in hearing about at least two of them. In July Father Edwin Stube spent three days with us . He has very recently accepted a call to St Timothy's Church in Catonsville, MD. But for a number of years he had a very wonderful ministry in Indonesia, where he founded the Lawang Bible Training School in Java. From there, his students went out in teams to ~b e =, othel:: = isla~ds of Indonesia, where they victoriously preached the Gospel - with signs following! (Mark 16: 15-20). And as an indigenous ministry is what we pray and hope for in Nava joland, of course Father Stube's ministry in Indonesia is of great interest to us. We had hoped that all the priests of the Episcopal Church in Navajoland could come here and visit with Father Stube; however his visit was at a time when several were on well-earned vacations, so only Father Steven Plummer and his wife were able to come, and very glad we were to see them. Another visitor , who came three times, once with his charming wife and children, was Jim Branscum from Phoenix. He is a very fine artist, whose picture of an eagle those of you who read ARIZONA HIGHWAYS will have seen on the outer cover of a recent ed ition. On his second trip Jim left with us two framed pictures of his eagle studies, which we look at admiringly and proudly . He is planning to be in our area again to do some Navajo studies. We also had visitors from foreign lands, and the ores from farthest away in USA wer.e Dr Bob Liebler and my four youngest grandchildren - with whom we shared a very happy weekend. DO YOU KNOW WHERE WE ARE? How many times have we, when away from home, been asked, "Well, how are things in Oljeto?" Well, we are not in Oljeto. Or we are asked, "Everything all right in Monument Valley?" No, we are not in Monument Valley. To be sure, our post office address is Monument Valley, ' but we are not in it, nor is the post office! It is very near, and Monument Valley is a widely known and beautiful area, but that's where it ends, We are in an area 3 miles south o~ Oljeto which the Navajos have called Tse bich'a bikoo, translated: Rock~s Hat Valley or area, in honor of a large rock formation (see our letterhead) in pyramid form, but with a cap ~lik e figure atop it. It is about a mile from Hat Rock to our place -- it is easily found by visitors who, soon after passing the Rock see in the distance a cluster of trees and then buildings, which are the Vicarage and the Church of St Mary-of-the-Moonlight. We are constantly surrounded by lithe beauty of the earth - the beauty of the skies"; more than one newcomer has gazed in rapture and said, "I see it; I know I see it - but I dontt believe it!" Daily we praise God for being here. The last six weeks have been especially happy, as we have had an old friend staying with us and helping us with lithe daily round, the common task". Marc Costa, who, as Brother Michael, O.S.F., came to Bluff in 1943 with the original group of people to start St Christopher's Mission to the Navaj o , has this to say:- "A lot of sand has blown across this desert since I've written anything for the mission. Something like 34 years! Let me say from the start that it has been a great joy to spend this past summer at Hat Rock. It brought back many memories and yet much has been changed. It has been good for this old man to become a part of t he life, both spiritually and physically. It has |
