Show 2 on that day, although several washes were running. McElmo Wash has been the worst, but it is only a half mile from the Government School so that we can wade if necessary. The children were responsive and well enough behaved, and were pleased with the Bishop's all too brief talk. After the class, the three went as far East as the Colorado line, visiting many sick folk in their hoghans. There were many cases that looked like "flu" and several were probably pneumonia - without the proper diagnosis one can only do what one can, and thank God when the following week sees them running out with grateful smiles to meet one. Needless to say, it was long after dark when the three returned tired but happy to the Mission. By Tuesday, Fr. Liebler was well enough to go with the Bishop and Father Brown to Kayenta; Sister and Helen had gone on ahead in one of the jeeps to get some calls made and prepare the classroom for "Church." Just as well, for a flat tire, and inability to find the jack, caused some delay. Kayenta is 75 miles from the Mission, and the children - over 500 of them - are mostly signed up for the Presbyterians who have carried on able and valiant missionary work in that area for many years. The children who are signed up for us are from the Navaho Mountain and Oljeto areas, and their incorporation into the Mystical Body is the fruit of our steady, regular monthly visits to those places, interrupted only rarely by impassable trails or more rarely by illness. Navaho Mountain school has only beginners and first grade, accordingly we are especially pleased now td have them go where we can minister to them as they come to "riper years." |
