Show 3 school employes or just friends assembled in picturesque array. The gist of the ritual was translated for their benefit into Navaho - it was for nearly all of thern their first witnessing of a Christian marriage ceremony. 1ft WE LIVE in a world of change, even ;. in Navaho land. Now that we are 'vet"eran missionaries, we are enjoying re-visits from many friends, and always it is: "When we were here last you didn't have-." In 1942 Fr. Liebler spent five or six days at Mexican Hat, and during that time one tourist car-a honeymoon coupleand one commercial car-a hat salesman from Omaha, passed over the ' road. Today there are seldom less than eight or ten parked at the trading PQst there, and the road from Bluff to the Hat is to be a black top. Perhaps the most startling vehicle is one we pass on every trip down that way - a large Volkswagen bearing the device MONUMENT V ALLEY STAGE. Yes, you can now go from Monticello to Flagstaff by stage. Mexican Hat perhaps shows more change than most parts of the country, because of a large uranium refining mill being erected there. We see there as large a concentration of Navaho population as in any part of Utah, and of course we plan to put up a church there to take care of their spiritual needs. By the time our next Newsletter is issued, we hope to show some progress · Meantime, we make frequent visits to the community of Navaho and white, and of course they send their accident and clinical cases to us. _ 'NE CONGRATULATE the Gov- G ernment or our nation for the great strides that have been made ~ in recent years toward Navaho ~.r education and health. When we arrived it was estimated that there were school facilities for less than one fifth of the Navaho children of school age. Today. there are vacancies in most schools, and the only children not attending are those being held out by their parents, usually for the sake of herding sheep. The U. S. Public Health personnel has taken hold of the problems of health in a masterful way, and there is evidence that many of the scourges of past years will be brought under control~ and a constructive program put into effect In a short time. |
