Show 'A' star on the floor of the desert!" we exclaimed as we recently flew home from a meeting on Navajo work. As we saw the Mission grounds spread ou t below us, the top design of the new church building quite clearly looked like a white star or snowflake lying on the sandy valley. The contrast of whi te on ta n was very striking. Now the white star shines through the green trees and in autumn it will be seen through the gold of the turning leaves. Each season will give a new picture as we stand on the high bluffs and look down. Sadly, we had to stop all work on the new church and other construction at the beginning of June. Several bills were unpaid, costs rose over the long wi nter and we do not know now when we can resume. Maybe September will find the hammers rin ging a gain . In June, 1964, when all of you heard of the t ragic burning of the dear old log church, your response was most gracious and generous. Now we ask once again that you respond to help with the completion of this vision which has begun. Already the new church is rewarding in its beauty; the Navajo People have been most tha nkful for the cha nce to work at a steady j ob a nd for this very t angible belief in their future. The happy shout of "School's out" rang loud and clear one evening in May. T hat evening the p re-school had presented a Mother Goose play under the direction of Mrs. Sall y. Parents and Mission staff j oined children for coffee, cold drinks and cooki es in the kitchen, just after HumptyDumpty had refused to fa ll off his wall and Hickory- Dickory wouldn't come out of his clock. Schoolteacher , a nyone? Mrs. Sally is expecting in September and our English teaching in kindergarten must continue. Write if you can come or know of anyone who would help for a year. School's out! New people have j oined us here. Surely a most loving response from the Navajo People has been real here at the Mission. At the end of May there were twelve Navajo men, women, boys and girls a t regula r j obs each day; half live here. Anna has become Father Wayne's secreta ry and bookkeeper ; J essie cooks and guards the kitchen (while Opal supervises). Many who wrote about summer work now know th e answer - no room. Sorry to say, our work crew on the const ruction has been laid off until we can start again. Anna joins staff " F all in love with a Navajo rug!" It can really happen and Nadine and Ruthie at St. Christopher' Shop in the town of Bluff show how. Our young people's shop opened on June 1 and greets touri ts every day. Your mail orders are also fi lled with the best quality of avajo a rts and cr afts that can be obtained from the People. Soon a paved road will lead directly to the Mission j ust two miles from Bluff. Don't miss saying hello when your vacation brings you our way. Jessie and Opal make "happy soup" |
