Y""'"The receipt is acknowledged of Office letter ,' of above reference calling my attention to reports which are reaching the Office regarding the destitute condition of the Indians of this reservation. The letter also transmitted a petition which had been sent in by tha County Attorney, Mr. Wallace Calder of Uintah County, Utah. My atten-tion was also directed to the a_uastion as to whether it would ba batter to make bi-monthly Issues of rations rather than monthly issues as. is now the practice and a report with recos-mendation askedlo-onr this latter subject. Under date of February tenth a report ".vas forwarded on the'subject of the present agitation for a cash payment .' and the effort which was being put forth to make it appear tha't-'-'such* was neces'sary'.on' account -of" the starvinr condition of the ..Indians. Since then I have. beer, cut for two days among the- Indians'and I am able to speak not only from the reports made ,jr.e by, my Farmers and Physicians but from personal . first.hand knowledge. 'Many of the Indian homes have very little accumulation, of food, but the. current supply which is . being furnished all such is sufficient to prevent distress. |
