Before leaving Washington, however, I had several talks with Senator Smoot and found him very strongly of the opinion that the troops sho-Id not be removed «ntil after the death of the present Chief, whose name I think is pedcap. Senator Smoot was strongly of the opinion that if the troops were removed while Pedcap was alive treble wo-ld probably ens-e Of co-rse, I have no f-rther information from yo- since yo-?r letter of A-g-st 25th, thro-gh the Secretary of ""ar, and it may be that the plans for an early removal of the troops have been modified in accordance with yo-r reo-est. I wo-ld prefer very m-ch to have this entire matter kept in its present states -r.til after rgr ret«m to Washington, and if Secretary Stimson is in Washington I think he will act in accordance with my wishes if yo" present the matter to him personally.
