Burke, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Washington, D. C^ Our Friend: We beg to call your attention to a letter dated March 28, 1925, which was signed by Assistant Commissioner of Indian Affairs E. B. Meritt and had to do with our tribal moneys. i last Saturday, June 6th, the Uintah Boarding School.closed for the year and the matter of holding a council v/ith our superintendent was taken up with him. An appointment was made to meet with him today and accordingly we gathered at the agency headquarters to discuss further our tribal affairs. Twenty year3 ago a delegation of Indians from thi3 reservation visited Washington. It ha3 been a long time and great changes have taken place with our people. Since that time a large sum of money was placed to our credit the same being known as the Ute Judgment Fund and amounting to nearly £2,000,000 for the Indians of this reservation according to the statement .received by our Superintendent. We feel that the expenditure of so large a 3um entitles us to a personal visit to your office for final information as to its use. The Superintendent has explained your letter to us but many of the Indians are still in doubt about the money. They feel that if a delegation of Indians visiting Washington is informed in person that these moneys are about gone they will be satisfied and will ask no further questions. There are other matters, also, which we wish to bring to your attention. It takes letters a long time to go and come. We feel that the balance of tribal money is small and that it could be used to no better purpose than to defray expenses of a delegation for a final conference in your office. It is our desire that the superintendent accompany us as he is well informed regarding our present advancement and future needs. |
