'••'•' 30EfM4f a>5i With reference to the above cited Office letter dated February 17, 1925, which calls attention to Office letter dated January 8, 1925, bearing file reference Do. 90265-24, relative to the status of tribal funds of the Indians under this jurisdiction, I have the following report to make. Office letter dated January 8th was received in this office January 13th. A council had previously been called for the purpose of formulating claims of these Indians against the government. The council was called for January 19th and the same took place on that date. Before adjourning, the matters contained in the above cited letter were explained to the Indians and they were greatly astonished to learn that their funds were exhausted to such an extent as to make a per capita payment impossible. Some became very angry and demanded that the Superintendent leave the agency at once as there would be no further need for him since there would be no money to distribute. Others realising the situation accepted the ultimatum more calmly while still others took it as a "joke" and became 'quite hilarious about it, laughing and shouting. :'Since January 19th Indians have been coming to the Superintendent inquring about their tribal funds. They can hardly realize that all their moneys have been used. In connection with statements submitted in support of their claims against the government, the Superintendent requested the Office to furnish a statement of their funds showing how they were used, etc.. This might be of some assistance in explaining further the situation. If funds can. be provided from year to year for the purchase of necessary seeds and equipment to help and encourage agricultural activities, it is believed that the non-payment of annuities will cause a healthy condition among these Indians.
