Sir: I have the honor to request additional instructions relative to the control of hunting deer in the State of Colorado. I have learned that several Indians have, in the last week, been hunting about one nils over the Colorado State boundary. I am aware that these Indians would immediately return if I sent for them, and also aware that they would again return to the hunt when they thought that no one would know it. There is a condition existing which I believe should be considered. I have made inquiry of neonle who should know, and I am informed that the game wardens in Colorado make no effort to stop the Indians hunting; and I have had oooeated to me fron reliable sources that these game v/ardens themselves encourage the Indians by telling then that they have the right to hunt thoro whon they winh. These Indians are citizens and live unon opened reservations. They are subject to the local laws and not to control of this agenoy in these matters. If the game |
