Show 1 I. Com. - 7 - psrfectly rediculous for any one to say that these Indians should be permitted to continue such a dance, especially at the season when they hold it. If they are always to remain idle Indians and be able to load up their entire possessions and move to- the grounds and remain there indefinitely without loss, then they might be allowed to continue it; but if they are to have homes and crops and cows and chickens and property then there can only be one side to the question. Some of the men, including tho Marshal, have thought that before another year the question of the wisdom of their being allowed to hold the dance should be "thoroughly investigated" in order to determine whether or not it should be stooped. Many of the men who have lived here for many years ahd have always seen the Indians dance the Sun Dance evsry year, pride themselves • on their long acquaintance with the Utes and claim that their customs ought not to be disturbed. There is a strong sentiment in some quarters against being told by any new-comer what is good for the utes. But the fact is that only some one who has seen 7/hat Is being accomplished with other tribes will appreciate what is possible to the Utes. I do not concede that the question-as to whether the dance should or should not be stopped admits of any argument whatever. I KNOW it should be stooped. Definite regulations or laws should be cited or if *>"-_.._..-., - y177- 'F-^ ^ y-^ 7 """^ •*?'^"iO \ • .£* r' o- 3-y fyyyyR -HI Ml./a .. |l-h I.IlM nW/1'..'i u| |,l).j ||. 0, . ;.|, l,.,rn.iy |)t)ij .,!i,,,,„u,, 11iii,u I, about. the law undor which he could have acted.
