Show I Com. -4- had reported him to be starving. On Jan. 22, we again sent the old man four months supply of rations, having a chance to do so by a passing team. • The third family reported as.starving was-Gilbert and his wife Mianna. They too were accustomed to get a check and the same has lately been discontinued. Gilbert is an industrious Indian who has been indiced to go out upon his wife's allotment and begin to clear and farm her land. She had some money last spring. The lease v.as cancelled on the allotment of one of her sons upon which allotment there had been built a little two room house, and Gilbert and family took possession of it and he out in a creditable crop the past season. They bought a good young team, smae implements etc., and thus U3ed up about all their money, having only enough left to cay them a monthly subsistence check for such time a3 their crops should mature and become available. One of their sons is employed, getting regularly yoO.oo per month, and Mr. Ferrell informs me that Gilbert has been working this winter, getting out posts, and is in no sort of imperative need. He and Mianna were in the office the latter part of this month, and made no mention of being in distress having come in by request to testify in heirship cases. The snow is very deep, several feet in most parts of the reservation, and all hand3 at this agency are instructed to be on the look out for cases of want, not only, on the part of the Indians but their stock as well. Respectfully, -y- |
