As is usual with these Indians when the head men determine upon any particular course they affirm that authorities in Washing-ton told them, upon their former visits to the Capitol, that they were to do this thing. A council was held at which I plead with them to defer the dance until fair time. and the head men informed tie that the"Sun-dance Grounds ".which i3 a part of the Indian grazing ground, had been set aside with the knowledge and assent of the Indian Office in Washington, for Sun-dance purposes, and that upon the occasion of their last visit to Washington, the continued m_e of the grounds had been authorized by the officials for that purpose. Simply because I know that their statement t is erroneous, it doesnot follow that the rank and file #of tha tribe can be easily convinced that it is so. I have. therefore, dona what seemed to me wisest in the matter and most likely to be productive of ultimate good results. Respectfully, yJc^ort^6t <:F //f^/'7(w^ JIM-VOM -^y Supervisor in Charge. |
