The Commissioner of Indian Affairs, ww'g ,/•- Washington, D. C. * ' * * ' -'• • ' . ; • ' ' - Sir: ::,y It has been the practice in the past to make an annuity payment to these Indians once each year, usually in the spring or early summer. This payment was made from interest on the Ute 4% fund and amounted to about $17 to $20 per capita. By Indian Office letter of Feb. 3. 1912, I am advised that since the judgment of #3,305,257.19, was rendered in favor of the Ute Indians Feb. 12, 1911, that no interest has accrued and consequently there are no funds from which to make this payment until Congress provides therefor- By this 3ame letter I am advised that recommendations have oeen made to Congress looking to the payment of interest on the judgment. In case that Congress acts favorably on this recommendation it is presumed that funds /* for 3uch payment will be available immediately after the /' /Jt Tiiw goes into effect. t •••-3.Wyy A number of the head men came to me yesterday and made anxious inquiry relative to the usual payment and I explained the situation to them as fully as I. could as |
