I have the honor to report for the information of the Depart- -ment that one H.P.Laiie in Hovcmber 1891 filed a clain for land belonging to the Uncompahgre Indian Reservation, which clain covers a vein of Asphaltum. This claim is located near Y.est "boundary line of the reservation, about 15 miles from Ouray Agency and aoout 50 miles from Port Duchesne. I have been reliably informed that Lahc has turned his claim over to the Utaherite Asphalt Co. of Gait Lahe City, and it is report •- -ed that he is to be paid, or has been paid by said company in a consideration of 50000 shares of the Company's stock. Before I was put in charge; of these Indian Reservations in July last, I was aware that Lalce v;as a trespasser and that the company he had ncgociated with was working the mines. On assuming my duties as Indian Agent, I immediately ordered their work stopped Lake being the only one recognised as trespasser, as I had no |
