If as stated by Agent Byrnes there are no agricultural lands on tho Uncompahgre reservation for allotment to these Indians, it would so em that some action is necessary to carry out, in good faith, the provisions of the Act of 1S80, at least so far as putting them on "agricultural lands"- Though the law provides for their location upon-individual allotments, I do not think , they are in condition to take allotments. Tho area of the Uncompahgre reservation is 1,933,440 acres, and the number of Indians belonging thereon is 1,007, whioh is equivalent to 1,920 acres, per capita, but if the lands are unsuitable for agricultural or grazing purposes, the sooner tho Indians are located upon such land as their agreement flails for* the better. |
