Show DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, UNITED STATES INDIAN SERVICE, Choyenne River Agency, S.D. August 1, 1907. Captain C. G. Hall, U.S.A., Aoting Indian Agent, Uintah Agency, White Rocko, Utah. My dear Captain: I was sent here to confer with the Absentee Utes, who are located about 80 miles northwest of this agency, and visited them at their camp last Tuesday. They are nicely located, but are very poor and were it not for the generosity of the Sioux, who made them nany presents of clothing, tepees and even money upon their arrival hero, they would be quite destitute other than a three fourths ration which is being issued to them bi-weekly. It is generally believed that, in order to augment their numbers here, the Utes have been writing very rose colored letters to their friends back in Utah, inviting them to come on and join them here, and should such be the case I would suggest that you advise all of your Indians not to be misled by such communications, for the Absentee Utes here are sure to experience considerable hardship the coming winter, the winters of this northern latitude being much more rigorous than the Utes are accustomed to. Furthermore, the supplies provided for their eubaiistenc©, for the current fiscal year, permits of only three*.ourthfl of an Indian ration and there being no game in the country they will have to rely |
