Show 17 f • next morning and the Indiana are now so good that "butter would not •melt in their mouths:" that the information was given the Agent by a policeman, who is now so badly scared by the chiefs that he denies it all, and in his {the Supervisor's) presence he said he never told the Agent anything and denied that Blackhawk intended to burn the school; that the chiefs told the Supervisor that the Agent was a bad man to bring the buffalo soldiers on then tc kill them for nothing; '.'.at the policeman who has been stationed at the school offered his resignation, which was not accepted. In the Supervisor's opinion he will either get out or be killed. Ks says the chiefs all promised that the rest of the school children will go back as soon as they get well, and this he thinks will be done, but he told them they must send in enough more to make up a hundred, which they promised him and agreed to stop all opposition to the school; that they are particularly anxious to let bycgones be by-gones apparently as they are obviously afraid of the soldiers. The Supervisor is of opinion that the fear of the soldier? and the rations are the.only things that control these Indians to-day. He" is cf opinion that tho Indian police should be abolished and a detachment of soldiers placed under the orders of the Agent; that at prusent the soldiers are there only to protect life and property, but not to force the ordinary laws. It will thus be readily seen from the statements above made that some active steps must be taken to change the educational conditions on this reservation.
