Sir:- I have to report that immediately after you left this morning I tol4 Willie Reed to go to school.He hesitated, but finally went to the Boys' building after I had told him three times. I left him in the bath room, and went to my work, and upon my return, a half hour later, he v/as out at the gate again talking to his mother.According to your instructions, I could not touch him for disobeying. I told him to go back to the Boys' building, and Mr. Rhodes told him as well, but ho would not go until we pushed him back. My experience at other schools has always been that pupils were made to obey, ani if they refused, they were punished by whipping, ani I have never seen trouble arise from such punishment. These children tell their parents that they have been whipped, when they perhaps havs bf.en lightly touched, or in all probability havo not been pun-inhnd in any manner. In view of the fact that you have given instructions that pupils shall not be touched, it ••yd 11 be necessary for you to advise what mole of punishment shall be used. You know that the jail R.S it is conducted is a farce, and the keeping of pupils on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, besides working a particular hardship on employees to run a |
