Show -2- this Office Is advised informally by the Commissioner of the General Land Office- that a change has been made in the reservation for Towneite Ho. 1. Aooordlng to the instructions received by the General Land Office, only tho lands south of the river and lying in sections 25 and 26, township 3 south, range 2 west, ore reserved, the opinion being expressed that the lands so reserved should be sufficient for all purposes and that the amount of land rooommended to be set aside by the Commission was greater than required. A portion of the lands so sot apart and direoted to be survoyed by the 8ocretary embraced the west half of tho east half of section 25, relinquished by KcKcwon, Uncompahgre allottee Ho. 181. This matter is called to your attention for such report as you think advisable to make under the circumstances. In reports concerning this town8ite it appears that HcKewan relinquished this 160 aore tract and took other lands for tho purpose of making the townslte reservation a suooess and on the condition that the lands recommended by the Commission be set apart for townslte purposes* The change now made might properly be objected to by this allottee as he has no doubt Buffered some loss and inconvenienoe, and if the ohange in the site would affect his interests unfavorably no doubt hie objections should be heard. The whole matter should receive attention at your hands at the very earliest possible moment, for if the faith of the Office is Involved in the matter of scouring UdKewan's relinquishment or the Interests of the Indians are not fully |
