Sir: This office Is in receipt of your connunioation of the 11th instant, in which you enclooo a written statement from Mies Lucy Nelson Carter, Episcopal Missionary at the Agency under your charge, Tho states that February 14th, 1902, an Indian baby waa brought to her by its father, the mother having died; that the father has since died and that the child has now no near relative*; that the child was brought to her with the understanding that should the father die, she was to ke9p it; that this child, Reuben MoKinney, is now seventeen menths old and that she wishes to adopt it. Miss Carter further states that her missionary co-worker, Mies Catherine Murray, has an Indian baby boy named Wanzits, who is now thirteen months old, and was brought to her to keep and raise upon the death of its mother; that the .father has given his consent to the same; and that Miss Murray wishes to adopt the baby. You state that these babies have been nursed and taken cars of by the said missionary ladies, mho have gi7en them |
