Show and depending entirely upon the chase for substanance. Sauriet's band of Utahs has paid their annual visit to the settlements arriving about the last of July, and camped on Spanish Fork river. This is one of the most formidable as well as peacable and friendly bands of all the Utahs numbering seventy lodges, they had considerable of presents made them by the citizens of Spahish Fork City. I visited their camp at the old chiefs request, when he inquired whether the "great chief of the American people" had sent them presents about which he inquired when he visited the settlements one year since. I replied that he had not I gave him a few presents when he informed me that in a few days his band would again return to the Navajoe country where I have learned they have some game. I think I can say with confidence that peace and tranquility reign to a greater extent among the different bands of Indians in this Territory at this time than ever has at any other period since its first organization. Before closing this report let me once more endeavor to bring with notice of the department of Indian Affairs the condition, wants, and desires of the Southern Indians in regard to agriculture pursuits. The great inquiry of me is made by those Indians upon with great American chief going to send his scouts to learn as to pursuits. I hope the department will take this matter under immediate consideration and urge it upon the attention of the next Congress so that, that body may make liberal appropriations for this |
