Show o'ir other expedition to the south, at the request of the Supt. and in aid of Col. Steptoe in trying to accomplish his delecate (sic) mission with the Pah-vantes peacebly and without resorting to war. I have chosen for the sum of fifteen hundred dollars. Whihc I hope will be favored with our consideration. I will also take the liberty to state that I find the public property which was turned over by my predecessor to Maj. Rose, Sub Ind. Agent broken down and worn out and not fit for the service. The Major also refuses to give up anything until his draughs are paid. I would advise that he be required to account for them at their appraised value when delivered to him. And I wish to be informed if I am allowed an outfit and if so how am I to get it? The business of this agency is my extensive and I think affair a filled for useful exertion. But without it is impossible to be of any service. Very Respectfully Your obedient Servant Garland Hurt To Hon. Charles E. Mix Act. Commis (?) Washington D.C. Indian Affairs Washington D.C. Maj. Hurt the Indian Agent is about to leave on a very important mission for the purpose of quieting the Indians, and assist in capturing the murderers of Capt. Gunnison. The chiefs have sent him word that they are desirious of seeing him, and I doubt that he will be of great service. The state of the Agency here is also presented in this letter by the Maian (?) Agt. The draft which he has drawn is necessary in my opinion and as small as he could draw under the circumstances. J.F. Kinney Ch. Justice Sup. Court Territory of Utah |
