Show (037) Edward M. Bedell to Comm. Ind. Affairs RG 75 Microcopy 234 August 30, 1853 Reel 897 Salt Lake City Aug. 30, 1853 Hon. Geo. H. Manypenny Sir, I arrived here on the 15th of last month Maj. J. Holeman my predesessor had left in the first of July as I was informed by Gov. Young for California and had taken with him the Government horses and other property I have not been as yet able to get hold of anything. As my horses were poor and in no condition for active service I was obliged to purchase two horses for the Government for immediate use. The Utah Indians under their wily and sagacious chief Walker are committing frequent murders and roberries (sic). On the 17 of this month they attacked four men going to Snyders Mill (?), some twenty miles from this place killed two and wounded one of them. They took 4 horses, 2 mules and 3 guns. Gov. Young immediately dispatched a company of mountain men after them who sent back the dead bodies to this city in charge of three of their company the men assigned proceeded on but were not able to discover the Indians. The Indians have taken over three hundred head of fat cattle in the Territory and a large number of horses. Several small bands of Indians have come into the city for protection. They say they desire to be friendly with the whites. They state also that Walker threatens them in case they do not take up arms against the whites.
