Sir: I am in receipt of your letter of the 18th. instant, stating that some of your Indians, beaded by Chief Ignacio, have requested permission' to leave their reservation for the purpose of hunting, which request you refused to grant, for reasons given} but as they were indignant at your refusal, you promised,, in'order to-quiet them, to write for the requisite authority. In reply L have to-say that by article one of the agreement ratified by act of Congress, approved April 29,1874, [ 18 Stat. 36 ] the Utes ceded and relinquished their right-to a large tract of country therein* described. Article.two of that agreement- provides that "the United States . shall permit the Ute Indians to-hunt upon'said lands so: long as the game lasts, and the Indians are at. peace with the white people." By the agreement of June 15,1880, C 21 Stats. 201 rail the provisions of the treaty of March second, eighteen'hundred and sixty-eight, and the act of Congress approved April twenty-ninth, eighteen-hundred and seventy-four, not altered by this agreement, shall continue in force, &c. • ' 1. do not find any provisions in that agreement altering the provis- |
