Olcott: rave your l e t t e r of the 24t-., in which you discuss two subjects, the f i r s t one being the a r t i c l e in the Uew York Tribune of the 22nd concerning t i e c i r c u i t r recently issued admonishing Indians against excessive dsncing. i- s the r e s u l t of constant effort or the psrt of the Interior Department, the Indians generally h^ ve abandoned many of t h e i r ceremonies that were harmful srd demoralising, and the purpose of the late circular, "" hish ras Irtended to apply mostly to Indians that are getting inter- sted in farming and stockraising, was to try ard induce them to be more moderate in r e s p e c t ' t o dancing, end p a r t i c u l a r l y during the season when they should be attending to t h e i r crops. • i th reference to the cond111ons on account of the Piute trouble in Utah, •• e :•;? ve severe 1 t e l e g r t - s from our Superintendent, who is on the ground, to the effect that a ll is quiet and the situation is being csred for ir: a manner that will dispose of i t in the near future in a way that there - i l l be less likelihood of a recurrence of the trouble than might be the case if it >. as not dealt with in a firm manner. On the occasion of my v i s i t to the Ute fountain reservation in Colorado e& vly last summer, the Superintendent mentioned that these Fiute and T. te Indians sre the only on3s "~ c t c e s t that they - i~ ver have been conquered. This caused me to remark that i t is time that they understand-that they must obey the law and submit to Government superv i s i o n . The day of treating with Indians by methods that are observed between countries at war is past. if some of the Flutes have been guilty of v i o l a t i n g the laws of Utah, they should be punished the same as otrer lawbreakers, and any effort on the part of the tribe of vnich tney may be members to prevent the enforcement of tne law should not be encouraged. Ve believe th*. t there will be no serious r e s u l ts from the pending disturbance, ard the. t it v i l l be promptly & na s a t i s f a c t o r i l y adjusted. e h \ f £• ver;.
