Sir: Office telegram dated the 18th was received yesterday, in response I have the honor to submit the following report: V/ lien I first took up the work of this assignment, in conpany with Superintendent ttc. Kean I visited the Posey band of utes and Paiutes at Blanding, where they were held in the stockade. It was explained that allotments were to be made to then and that it was the intention of the government to build a school for their children. The Indians all asked that they be allotted in Allen Canyon as that was their hone and they did not want to go & ny other place. LIr. « c. Kean and I visited Allen Canyon and we found there some very good land although it was limited in amount. There appeared to be sufficient water to irrigate ail the land that would be farmed for eons years to come. There were mar. v cleared places and old cornfields and fences where Indians had lived for many years. It was decided that Allen Canyon was the proper place for the Posey band, and 1 proceed to rice the allotments there. Fnen I refer to Allen Canyon I mean the creel- rs named Allen Canyon, Hammond Canyon and Cottonwood Creek. I " shew on the attached map the location of these creeks and the location of the fifty allotments that have been surveyed, applications have not yet been filed pending the elimination of that'oart which i « within the La Sal National Forest. The lands to be allotted to the Posey band I have classified as follows: Irrigable ., 730 acres Konirrigable- agricultural 4oO acres Grazing J8p0 acres The above is practically ail the land that has any value in that part as there are large areosthat are bare rock or steep bluffs. |
