When i n v i t e d to e n t e r a f l o a t in the Conservation Day parade of the Upper Peninsula S t a t e F a i r , the e n t r y they b u i l t during- free time, depicting a scene from " Hiawatha11, was so well done t h a t i t was awarded f i r s t prize among 47 c o n t e s t a n t s ; t i e p r i z e money being used to give a dance at the conclusion of p l a n t i n g operations at which approximately 200 quests attended. Moreover, l a r g e l y equipped with m a t e r i a l purchased through canteen funds, and with these paying the umpires, our b a s e b a l l ' t e am was enabled to play through a r e g u l a r schedule l a s t summer and l a y claim to the Upper Peninsiila CCC championship. Thus, the operation and cooperation of the canteen has made possible many things which our l i m i t e d r e c r e a t i o n a l funds could not afford, and consequently aided m a t e r i a l l y in making the l i f e of the camp, so f a r from a c i ty with r e c r e a t i o n a l f a c i l i t i e s , decidedly more p l e a s a n t. And so we say " A Tear of Service and our sincere a p p r e c i a t i o n ." 3ASKET MAKING AMONG THE UTES The A l l e n Canyon Utes have b u i l t up a r e f u t a t i o n for themselves for t h e i r basket making- This a r t has been going on for y e a r s . The Navajo discovered t h i s basket and Immediately adopted i t for a medicine basket, thus a market was made for i t. These Ute baskets are of two s i z e s , the smaller and the l a r g e r . The smaller one i s used f o r a - medicine b a s k e t , while the l a r g e r one i s used as a wedding basket from which a corn meal mush i s served to the bride and groom and g u e s t s . The baskets a r e woven from willows and c a r r y an Indian design. The older wossen a r e the b e t t e r weavers due to experience. The Allen Canyon Utes a r e the only ones in t h i s j u r i s d i c t i o n to hold to the old t r i b al custom of basket weaving. Due to erosion and over- grazing the willows used in t h e i r weaving are becoming s c a r c e . This type of willow i s to be c u l t i v a t e d near the Indians' immediate l o c a t i o n i n order to encourage'them in t h i s very worthwhile c r a f t . Weaving i s to " be encouraged as a means of s e l f - s u p p o r t . One of the b e t t e r weavers i s to be chosen to i n s t r u c t younger women in t h i s a r t. The goal for t h i s year i s to have these women weave about 550 b a s k e t s . Mr. E. Z. Black of Blanding, Utah i s sponsoring t h i s p r o j e c t.
