Show TAPE # 21 The following is a tape recorded interview done at White Mesa, San Juan County, Utah on August the 13th, 1980. The interviewers are Gregory Thompson and Floyd O'Neil of the American West, University of Utah. The interviewee is Mrs. Helen Lang. The subjects are mainly autobiographical and the history of the White Mesa Ute Community. The interpreter is Sarah Owl. O'N: Mrs. Lang, where were you born? HL: ( Ute.) C: Hatch, over here. O'N: The Hatch Trading Post? C: Around that area. O'N: I see, then that's in Montezuma Creek. C: Yah. O'N: How long ago? Does she know her age? HL: ( Ute.) C: No, not really. O'N: Okay, fine. What was her father's name? HL: ( Ute.) C: George Lang. O'N: Is it Lane? C: L- A- N- G. O'N: L- A- N- G. Okay, fine. And where was he from? Where did his people come from? C: Over at ( Ute.) 0TN: Were they always out there? C: ( Ute.) HL; ( Ute.) C: Maybe he's been out there all that time but she says she don't really know. |
