The Act to pension the survivors of certain Indian wars from January 1, 1859, to January, 1891, approved March 4, 1917, grants a pension of $ 20 per month to surviving officers and enlisted men, and $ 12 per month to the surviving widows of said of-ficers and enlisted men, who served in the campaign in the Black Hawk Indian War in Utah from 1835 to 1867, inclut'iv* The Smoot amendment, which makes it pos-sible for the Black Hawk War Veterans to prove their service and grants them a pension without pre-vious recognition or payment for said service by Government, reads as follows : * ' That when there is no record of service or pay-ment for same in the War Department, the appli-cant may establish the service by satisfactory evi-dence from the muster rolls on file in the several State or Territorial archives : And provided further, That the want of a certificate of discharge shall |
