Show Per the test schedule established, Tuesday, January 22nd was designated as the first day to burn pelletized biomass. The schedule called for a boiler steam flow rate of 28,000 lb/hr., or maximum motor loading established earlier on the coal pulverizer. Per request of DER, testing had to be in compliance with legal standards; therefore, it was necessary to make three runs per fuel, each of approximately ninety minutes duration. Due to the low stack velocities experienced while firing pelletized biomass, test run duration was increased to one hundred twenty minutes per run. Pelletized biomass was burned for approximately seven hours and the boiler load was held throughout the day. Additional fuel was placed in the silo in preparation for Wednesday's wood burn. On Wednesday, the 23rd, the boiler was operated at approximately 28,000 lb/hr steam flow rate throughout the day, burning pelletized biomass. The DER was again present to monitor fuel gas emissions. This day was designated as public information and tour day. Many state dignitaries and news people were at the site. A brief presentation was held and those present toured the facility. Thursday, the 24th, was designated to fire pulverized coal in the boiler. A measured quantity of coal was placed in the silo and the pulverizer feeder gate and pulverizer throat clearance were adjusted to grind coal. Coal was initiated into the boiler, the fire adjusted and steady steam flow rate established. Stack emissions at a boiler steam flow rate of 28,000 lb/hr were approaching 35% opacity. After one data run, DER's sampling equipment became plugged with particulate and they could only make one run. The boiler remained on line through the day and operated until the silo ran out of coal. 26-18 |
