Description |
General Thomas L. Kane, friend to Brigham Young, was well known as a mediator between the Mormons and the federal government. He and his wife, Elizabeth, visited Utah in 1872-73. This publication is a collection of letters Elizabeth wrote to her father during the trip. The letters provide interesting descriptions of Mormon social customs, Mormon-Indian relationships, and insightful observations of the practice of polygamy among the Mormons. |

President Brigham Young to help solve the problem of dividing Brigham Young's personal wealth from that he held as trustee- in-trust of the church. In his letters to the husband, Brigham Young did not fail to express his warm affection to the family-especially after their visit. On July 3 I, 1873, he wrote: We often think of yourself, Mrs. Kane and Evan and Willie and the pleasant hours we spent together. Your visit made impressions that will never be forgotten. My family are in good health. They send their love, in which I join to you, my dear friend. Give my best respects to Sister Kane, in whom I was happy to find all the good qualities which have been described to me by her good hus- band; also to your children; and that the Lord may bless and preserve you all is the constant prayer of your friend, /s/ Brigham Young The close ties of friendship continued between Brigham Young and the Kane family. Upon the death of President Young in 1877, Kane, though in poor health, boarded the train and hurried to Utah in time to attend the funeral of the Mor- mon leader. But Kane's services to the Mormon people did not stop with the death of his friend Brigham Young. He continued to work in their behalf in places where he had influence. All the while, Thomas Kane's health deteriorated. But even on his death bed in December 1883, he asked his wife to convey his warm feelings of friendship toward his Utah friends. Elizabeth Kane sent the following letter to George Q. Can- non in Salt Lake. My dear Mr. Cannon: Your friend suffered intensly [sic] until a few hours of his release, and his mind was wandering from the . . . xv111 |
