I believe that art is simultaneously a catalyst for, and a reaction to, human connection. I use my own experience with others to inform how I move, and my movements are a culmination of all the information I have gathered. Through performing, I want to explore basic human-ness through a variety of different tools. By exploring extremes of the five senses, I come to a mutual understanding with my coinhabitants in a space. I use familiarity often in my creative research. Familiarity with an audience, with a space, or with myself. Let's Make It a Thing was a collaborative research process. I wanted to see how I could take movement material that was recognizably "Severin" and see how it translated onto other bodies. By identifying the implicit movement biases each movement contributor had, I was able to create a hybrid style that was aesthetically compatible for all. My research was not only about working collaboratively, but quickly. I experimented with how fast artistic decisions can be made while still keeping with the tone and style of the dance. Let's Make It a Thing was created in less than 7 hours of studio-time and successfully presented to an audience. |
