Title Social media and political affiliation: the GAP between twitter and Facebook
Date 2023
Description Social media plays a major role in the everyday life of most American citizens. With such a large audience, social media companies have a huge task in making sure content on these sites is as unbiased as possible. However, social media bots are on the rise and an increasing number of people get their news from social media instead of accredited news sources. Because of this, the problem of bias and misinformation on social media is growing. This study aims to identify the political bias of social media sites, as well as if those social media sites have the ability to skew people's presidential vote. Using the American National Election Survey "Pre Election: 2020 Social Media Questionnaire," this article questions if the usage of Twitter and Facebook is correlated with the likelihood of wanting to vote for President Donald Trump in the 2020 election if he was only running against President Joe Biden. The results found that people who used Facebook were significantly more likely to want to vote for Donald Trump. Yet, those who used Twitter were significantly more likely to want to vote for Joe Biden. These results alluded to there being different biases on different social media sites. This can be very concerning in terms of political polarization and "us vs. them" mentality.
